URGENT: FSD Election and Conference
Dear FSD Colleagues,
Besides the usual important items of business at the Feminist Scholarship Division business meeting (yes, we really do need you there!), we will be electing a new vice chair during the ICA conference in Dresden. Vicki Mayer of Tulane University will be running for the position previously held by Karen Riggs, who was forced to step down due to health problems. The election will be held during the FSD business meeting, which will be on Tuesday, June 20, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.. If you are not able to attend but would like to cast a ballot for Vicki or a write-in candidate, I encourage you to vote by proxy. Just have a colleague bring a signed letter to the business meeting stating your intent, and that colleague will receive two ballots. If you do not know of a colleague who will be attending but would like to have a voice in the election, please contact me by noon on Friday, June 16 (USA, Eastern Standard Time), and I will arrange for you to have a proxy ballot.
In other conference business, we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary as a division! The party will be held immediately after the business meeting, at 6 p.m. So please plan to attend the business meeting and stay for the party. We'll even have a birthday cake with candles! A small committee has been working on putting together the celebration, and it should be both fun and memorable. Immediate past chair Cindy Carter has contacted former division chairs, who will each spend a few minutes discussing their accomplishments and challenges as head of FSD, as well as memorable moments in our division's history. In addition, Yoo Jae Song has arranged for the production of special T-shirts to mark the event. (Some of you may remember * and even still have * T-shirts marking the 10th anniversary of FSD.) The 20th anniversary shirts are beautifully designed by a colleague of Yoo Jae's at Ewha University in Seoul, and they really are a bargain at $12 apiece. You might even want to bring home a few for family and friends.
Finally, of course, there's the conference * beginning with a preconference symposium on June 18. Carolyn Byerly organized the "International Symnposium on Women and News: Exploring Research and Social Change Agendas," and it has a wonderful roster of both presenters and participants. And then there's the conference itself. FSD has organized a program with 10 panels and 10 paper sessions, with topics ranging from the global gender divide to mothers who kill their children * and just about everything in between. In addition, some of FSD's top papers are in the plenary poster session, where they will compete for top honors with the papers from other divisions.
All in all, Dresden should be a great conference. For those who can make it, I look forward to seeing you there soon. For those who can't, I hope to see you next year!
